It is tempting to jump straight to advanced analytics and AI. The demonstrations are impressive, and the promise is real. But in plant after plant, the projects that stall have the same root cause: the process and the data underneath were not ready.
Do not automate waste
If a process is unstable, automating it does not make it efficient. If changeovers are uncontrolled, predicting their duration adds little. The first gains usually come from stabilising and simplifying the process, and from making losses visible to the people who can act on them.
Context makes data meaningful
A model may detect a change in machine temperature. Turning that into a sound decision requires knowing which product was running, whether the machine was in normal operation or setup, which grade was specified, what maintenance was done and what happened last time. That context comes from connected automation, MES, quality, maintenance and ERP.
Data can be available without being operationally meaningful.
A practical order of work
- Make equipment losses visible.
- Stabilise the process and remove obvious waste.
- Govern execution and capture product context with MES.
- Then apply specialist analytics and industrial AI to a foundation you trust.
